After being out of production for decades, Carl Hansen & Søn resumed production of Hans J. Wegner's CH22 lounge chair in 2016. At first glance, the large, striking wooden backrest with the visible cover caps is noticeable, but upon closer inspection of the armchair, further Wegner-typical details become visible. On the sides you can see, for example, that the armrest encompasses the side strut and the seat frame in order to expand to its full width under the armrest and thus give it optimal support. At the back, the seat's paper cords are threaded around the seat frame and down through a horizontal groove in the backrest. At the front of the seat there are two clever connections where the front legs are brought up through the hand-assembled corners.

Although production has of course been modernized, the CH22 is still manufactured today using the same craftsmanship principles as when Wegner traced and participated in the production of the first examples in Carl Hansen's family workshop in 1950. Meanwhile, modernization has improved precision so that the front legs, originally made round, can now have the same profile as the chair's back legs. This means that they are now made as Wegner originally drew them on his technical drawing, namely that the legs should be led up through the seat frame and locked with wedges.

Optimal use and care

Wood :

Wood is a living, natural material and should therefore always be cleaned as gently as possible. Regular cleaning with a damp cloth ensures that the furniture always looks good and has a beautiful patina. Never use aggressive cleaning agents to clean furniture.

Solid wood furniture should not be placed near heat sources such as radiators and wood stoves or stored in unheated rooms.
Wood is a natural material and therefore no two pieces are alike. Small knots, visible growth spots and color variations are part of the natural appearance of wood. The parts of a piece of furniture are always assembled according to color and structure so that the piece of furniture is beautiful and complete.
The furniture is beautiful and complete. Color and texture can vary from one piece of furniture to another.

Paper cord

The paper cords used at Carl Hansen & Søn are made from sustainable, FSC-certified materials. We use two different colors of paper cords: natural and black. The natural paper cord is made from unbleached paper while the black cord is dyed.

Normal cleaning and maintenance
Paper cord typically requires little or no maintenance as the durable paper cord is designed to last for years. If you want to clean the seat, you can wipe it with a well-wrung soft cloth and a neutral, colorless soap solution. It is not recommended to do this too often as it may cause unnecessary wear and tear on the paper cord. The paper cord has a thin layer of wax that prevents staining. However, discoloration of the paper cord can occur if strong liquids, e.g. E.g. red wine, fruit juice or strongly colored food can be spilled on the cord.
